“NO PIAST”

Directing & visual communication

By listing exactly what we see, it becomes visible what is not included in the dominant narrative, what is missing. The film is about the lack of the cinema Piast, that was open, closed, reopened and lost. The film sheds some light on memories of people who remember this place and brings the audience back to the lost cinema.

During the summer school in the twin cities of Frankfurt (Oder)
and Słubice, I discovered the abandoned Kino Piast — once
the Filmpalast, its name changed after 1945 by reusing the old sign’s letters. Beloved by locals, the cinema eventually closed, and missing letters on its façade left the haunting inscription NO PAST. Since then, residents of Słubice have had no cinema of their own, crossing the bridge to Frankfurt to watch films.

I developed a short film and a site- specific performance to respond to this absence. In collaboration with other participant, we gathered memories from locals, created shadow projections, and filled theempty poster frames on the façade with new invitations. For one night, we returned an audience to Kino Piast, transforming the ruin into a temporary cinema again.

The project combined filming, and collective storytelling to reflect on the role of cultural spaces in divided cities and how they continue to shape identity and belonging.

I design, illustrate, think, doubt, experiment in Rotterdam.
